I am sure you have heard someone talk about how our bodies are the same today as they were 10,000 years ago. The same goes for our brains. We haven’t evolved at all since then, and yet the world around us has changed dramatically, and at times, to the detriment of our health.

In our past, food availability was inconsistent and so we would feast when the yield was high so the extra body fat would take us through the lean times. Now there is more than we need and yet we are still biologically motivated to feast…and you guessed it…that extra fat never gets used.

In the past we had to work for our food. We had to hunt, we had to gather, we had to farm, and so energy was burned on a regular basis. Now, we exert no energy gathering our food and yet we eat just as much…and you guessed it…the extra fat never gets used.

In the same light, when once news came to us in drips and drabs, and never from parts of the world we couldn’t get to easily, now it is available to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. And from all corners of the glove, from multiple sources, with multiple viewpoints and multiple agendas.

Just like our bodies were not designed to eat as much as we do, and what we do, we also weren’t designed to be inputting information at the rate we do and as consistently as we do from as far away as we do.

Not unlike refined sugar, this concentration of news is simply not good for us. It’s addictive and it has negative health consequences.. And as hard as it may seem in these unpredictable times, the general consensus from mental health experts is that we would all benefit from a news diet.

Sticking with the food metaphor; a healthy news diet should be balanced, well portioned and sustainable. It isn’t just about distinguishing junk from quality (which is so important), it’s also about portion control and timing and here’s the kicker, it’s also about giving it time to digest before ingesting more.

Personally, I graze my media throughout the day, and in my mind that is the worst thing you can do. Not unlike grazing with food, you have no idea how much you have actually consumed until you start to feel a bit ill.

Perhaps a healthier method would be to treat it like I do my meals. Three squares a day, no snacks in between and then give it time to digest.

And what to do with all that extra time now? Maybe that is a perfect time for a walk with a friend, or a quiet cup of tea and a good book, or to start that meditation practice you keep putting off.

Just a little ‘food for thought..
