We are all trying on some level to look better, feel great, live longer and generally radiate great health. And that is why the health hack world is at an all time high. Speaking for myself, I can’t turn on my phone or scroll social media without some expert (and I really do mean expert…these are doctors and professors and scientists) talking about some shortcut hack that will get me these results so much faster. Whether it be an expensive supplement, a special light, some cool glasses, intermittent fasting, a cold plunge or a hot sauna there are no shortage of life hacks that will help us live longer and feel better. And I used to drink that kool aid. I didn’t have the basics down but I was set in my mind that I needed to do one of those things in order to take my health to the next level. And I’m not saying those things aren’t great (except for fasting for women, it has been shown to be negative for our health btw) but for me, I actually feel my best when I get the basics down. And so, in case you are confused about what you should or shouldn’t be doing to feel your best I thought I would share some of my “life basics”. The things I do on a consistent basis that have me feeling truly great the vast majority of the time. The things I think we would all benefit from doing before we even think about the fancy lights or expensive supplements. My “Life Basics” for a healthy, energetic, vibrant life: 1) Get enough sleep. And ideally be consistent with an early bed time. 2) Walk more. Especially in nature. 3) Drink more water. 4) Eat for performance, not for fashion. This means eat in a way that leaves you feeling energized, not inflamed. Fueled, not famished. 5) Lift heavy weights. Ideally 2 – 3 times per week. 6) Spend time and be present with people you care about. 7) Find time to be quiet. This means no music, no screens. Just you and your thoughts. And when I struggle to do those things above? These are the reminders I tell myself that more often than not get me up and moving or doing the right thing. Something is always better than nothing. Consistency beats perfection every time. When in doubt, show up. Do it for your Future You. Motivation follows action. It’s not the other way around. Just like almost all endeavors, from learning a sport to playing a musical instrument, we need to get the basics down first if we want to have a chance at success. Our health is truly no different. Basics first. Get fancy later… 🙂 |
