Think about where you spend your time. There’s your home, where you handle your ‘obligations’ like work or school or errands) and then…what? Where? If you’re just ping ponging between these two worlds sociologist Ray Oldenburg says you may be missing something.
He would say you are missing a necessary ingredient for a richer life…a third space.
So what is a third space and why does it matter so much?
Oldenburg coined the term ‘third space’ in 1989 to describe the role that a neutral gathering spot plays in building community. Third spaces act as a core setting for informal public life, offering connection, community and sociability. There is often, though there doesn’t have to be, a common interest that fosters community and civic engagement. They bind people together to construct communities. For adults, examples include cafes, clubs and you guessed it, gyms!
He was adamant that a place outside of home and work/school was necessary for our well-being. In third spaces you’re not mom or dad, you aren’t employee or boss or student. You’re just Christine.
Not only that, but third spaces bring us community. And as we age, these connections matter as much for longevity, as staying active or eating well.
A 2016 study with over 20,000 participants found that:
Older adults with higher social integration had 54% lower odds of developing hypertension, had lower inflammation levels and better blood pressure control.
These adults were also better protected against obesity.
And there is no denying it, we are living in an increasingly lonely society. Between social media, post pandemic social anxiety, video gaming, unlimited streaming services etc. we are slowly losing our third spaces.
And so, if you don’t have it yet, I encourage you to go out and find your third space. And, I hope it’s obvious, we would be thrilled if you consider us your third space.
At our studio we have seen members creating workout groups both inside and outside our studio. They workout together here but then go for a walk or jog on alternate days. There are few things that thrill us more when we can facilitate a new connection!
Wishing you a great day, full of healthy movement, and lovely connections.
