Have you seen the formula, BE x DO = HAVE? It’s a well known formula that helps people understand not only the importance of personal accountability and action taking but also goal setting And that’s why I always start the formula backwards with my clients…HAVE = BE x DO. Meaning: in order to know what you need to DO and who you need to BE, you first need to know what it is you want to HAVE. That’s because the GOAL determines the PROCESS. You can only be sure of what you need to DO by being clear on what you want to HAVE. The problem in todays overwhelming day and age is that we have so many conflicting goals that we end up taking one step in twenty different directions, rather than twenty steps in one singular direction. If you have a goal, and you are serious about that goal then step one is to now strip away lesser goals until your direction becomes more clear. Otherwise you will never end up more than one step away from where you are today… *** “If you have more than three priorities, you don’t have any.” Jim Collins Once you have no more than three clear priorities the next step is to determine WHAT you need to do to get yourself there, WHY those action items are important and then gain whatever skills you need to have so you know HOW to follow through on your actions, and make sure you DESIRE it badly enough so you can smilingly and non-apologetically say no to lesser things. *** “We are kept from our goal, not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal.” Robert Breault |
