Do you have a goal? What would you think if I told you there is a way to achieve that goal faster and easier? This week I want to share with you a trick by Benjamin Hardy, PhD. It is a very simple thing that you can do that will help you achieve your goals faster and it only takes 2 minutes a day!
It’s all related to Pearsons Law:
“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported to someone else , the rate of performance accelerates exponentially.”
If you want improved performance, you need to have accountability. And in order to have the best results, it needs to be daily accountability.
It’s that simple. Choose a goal then choose an accountability partner to report your progress to. Your accountability partner needs to be someone you like, someone you trust and you both need to agree on the form and frequency of communication as well as agreeing what you need from the other person (support, brutal honesty, something in between).
Another key requirement for success is to agree on what you communicate, because no one has the time to listen to everything you have done nor should they, it’s not effective. Pick the top three big actions you are committed to, the ones you feel will have the most impact. and report quickly and succinctly on your success or progress on those and those alone. This helps you focus on progress and outcomes, not just on busy-ness.
Every day at the end of the day share with your accountability partner how you did on your big three and include what three big actions you are committed to the next day. Its that simple. The added bonus is that this partnership creates social bonds along with social accountability.
The goal is that over time, you are focusing your energy on things that have massive impact. Remember the 80:20 rule, or the Pareto Principle? It is an aphorism which asserts that 80% of outcomes result from 20% of all inputs. If this holds true, it is suggesting that if you have 10 things on your To Do List to get you to your goal, you really only need to focus your energy on 2 of them and you will have 80% of the results that you desire. Throw one more in there and you have your Big Three.
Just know, it isn’t always essential that you accomplish 100% of your big 3 items, its ok if you don’t hit it each time. What is important is that you are actually chasing your future self, that you were actually being intentional vs just being reactive.
if you keep this up for a week, a month, three months, or a year you are creating an accountability to your future self of putting important before urgent, you’ll spend your time on the things that matter rather than the 10 things on your To Do List that don’t.
As always, step one is to find your AMBITION or goal, step two is to decide what ACTIONS you need to take in order to achieve that goal, step three is to find an ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER, decide what mode of communication is best and then each and every day let them know how you did on your BIG THREE actions of the day and what your big three are going to be the next day.
