Are you thinking of hiring a health coach or online trainer? If so, we of course hope you pick us, but even if you don’t it’s important that you understand the role of a coach and what to look for in a good one.
One of the first thing you need to determine with your coach is WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS? Then, once it’s been determined those are realistic for you a good coach will help you drill down to find WHY ARE THOSE GOALS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Then, they will help you determine WHAT ACTIONS you need to take in order to reach them.
It’s important to know that no matter how much they may want to, a coach can’t do it for you, nor can they want it for you. Your coach is responsible for picking the behaviours and actions that will trend you towards your goal, you are responsible for following through.
It takes some thorough work to find the right coach – someone who you like, respect and who has the knowledge necessary to assist you in your goals.
In no certain order a coach should have:
1) Credentials: Look for a coach who has experience and has been working with people like you and has the right skills set to help you achieve your goals. And here is the clincher, don’t assume that someone who looks like you want to look makes a successful coach. Go deeper than surface appearances and pick a coach based on how they can help you become your best.
2) Perspective: A good coach understands life. They realize that it is absolutely critical to maintain balance with work, family and social life and designs programs and sets expectations for you that allow you to maintain that balance.
3) Communication Skills: A good coach should be able to get the information you need across in a way that you understand and that resonates and makes sense to you. They should also be accessible and be able to ask questions via email or text that are not only timely but also detailed enough to answer your questions.
4) Honesty: This is a tricky one but you don’t want a coach who is there to stroke your ego and tell you what you want to hear. You want one that isn’t afraid to be honest with you on what you really need to hear in order to reach your goals. You also need to know you can trust your coach with anything you say or do. It may not be obvious at first, but exposing your physical weaknesses can make you vulnerable and you want to be with someone you trust so you can sweat, cry, grunt or groan and not worry about what anyone else thinks about it.
5) Motivation: A good coach should be able to motivate you to do your best, irregardless of how you feel on that particular day. Find a coach that inspires you to want to be your best!
6) Like-abilty: Yes, you need to like your coach. They don’t need to be your best friend but if you are going to spend a lot of time with them you need to enjoy their company so that you look forward to going in for more than the workout.
The neat thing is, you don’t have to stay local any longer to find the right coach. Online coaching and personal training is just as effective, if you have the right equipment at your disposal as in person.
